Off the beaten track
Most travelers to Egypt visit the famous sites in Cairo and Upper Egypt, but the country has many other interesting historical places. Here three of them:
Sinai
A traveler once describes Sinai as, "Thirty thousand square kilometers of nothing." In fact, Sinai has some of the most beautiful landscape in Egypt. It is also homes to wildlife such as the fox and the wolf, just as it was 3000 years ago. The monastery of St. Catherine is located in the center of Sinai. Built in the sixth century when the Romans were in Egypt, this is the oldest Christian monastery in the world. Its huge walls, which are 12-60 meter high, were built to protect its treasures.
El Minya
The area around El Minya contains tombs, temples and monasteries. One of the most famous sites in this area is Tel Al Amarna, which is 50km south of El Minya on the east bank of the Nile. The Pharaoh Akhnaton built temples and palaces here because he wanted it to be the capital of Egypt. Today the temples and palaces have gone, but the tombs that were cut into the hills remain.
Fayoum Oasis
Fayoum Oasis is a very fertile agricultural area which is famous for its waterwheels. These were built in the third century BC and were designed to life water from the river to the level of the fields where it was used for irrigation. There is a group of seen waterwheels to the north of the city.

Read the passage then answer the questions
Human beings need food, water and air which are all necessary for survival. People cannot live without food to eat, water to drink and oxygen to breathe. When it is cold, they need heat, clothes and places to live in. the environment provides these needs. People use the land and oceans for food. The atmosphere which is the air around the earth contains oxygen. Energy for heat comes from petroleum, trees or the sun.
Hundred of years ago, the environment supplied food, and housing for everyone. Population was low, and there was little industry. There was enough good land, fresh water and clean air. However, in the 18th century, the industrial revolution began in England. The western world changed from agricultural world to an industrial one. Many people moved from farms to cities in order to work. Industry grew very quickly. Since 1850, both population and industry have increased very rapidly. People need more land, more water and more resources daily. Industry is changing the environment very quickly. Some of the changes are harmful because the disturb the balance of nature. One such example is pollution.
There are several kinds of pollution; air, water and land. Industry causes air pollution. Factories release many chemicals an gases into the air, gases from cars also cause air pollution, especially in cities. Chemicals in the air cause smog in many large cities such as Tokyo and Los Angels . it is sometimes dangerous for people to breathe the air in these cities.
