1- Since 1997, the Egyptian government has been developing the Toshka Valley. It is a huge project. About 5 billion Egyptian pounds have been spent on desert land.
2- A huge canal was built to take water from Lake Nasser to the Toshka Valley. Soon, three enormous lakes formed in the valley. But how could they get water from the lakes to the land?
3- Now, a 300-kilometre-long concrete irrigation canal has been built to join the Toshka lakes with the Baris and Kharga oases. 25 million cubic metres of water a day are pumped from the Toshka lakes to farm land.
4- The project has not been easy. Building canals, pumping water and reclaiming land in the desert is expensive. New roads will need to be built to transport the crops to the rest of Egypt and for export.
5- However, the desert is already being turned into fertile land. Farms and towns are being built so we will export more food. The Toshka Valley Project will help our country enormously.
